A gentler way to care for silver with stones
Start with the whole piece—not just the metal—before choosing a cloth, soap or cleaner.
We know the temptation: your silver could use a little shine, and a quick cleaning trick looks easy. But when a piece includes a pearl, colorful stone or decorative finish, we’d rather start with the whole design. The metal is only part of the picture. Its stones, treatments, settings and finishes all help determine suitable care. If you’re unsure what you have, asking us is a good place to begin.
For routine handling, keep things gentle with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth. Support fine links instead of pulling the chain through your fingers, and avoid tugging on a setting. A plain cloth is different from a chemically treated silver-polishing cloth. Before using a treated one, check that it suits your finish and keep it away from anything its directions exclude. More rubbing is not always the answer.
Warm water, mild soap and gentle cleaning work for many gemstones, but that doesn’t make them right for every piece. Follow the instructions for your particular stone and construction. Do not automatically soak pearls, glued components or an unfamiliar finish. If washing is appropriate for your jewelry, remove residue carefully and dry it thoroughly. With removable pieces, use a bowl rather than working over an open drain.
We’d skip toothpaste, abrasive household powders and an improvised acid or baking-soda bath as an all-purpose solution. Silver dips can over-clean decorative details or affect other materials. Ultrasonic machines need care, too: vibration and certain gemstone treatments are not a good combination, and loose stones need attention. A stronger method is not necessarily a better one.
If your piece still looks dark or patchy, catches on clothing or has a moving stone, pause and have it checked. For welded jewelry, keep chemical cleaner off your skin and don’t stretch the chain to clean underneath it. Have a Starmarked piece you’re unsure about?
