Why your silver changes color—and what to do next

Pools, mineral springs and everyday contact can change silver’s surface. A little context makes care easier.

We love the bright glow of silver, and we also want you to know what everyday life can do to it. If your bracelet looked shiny last week and seems golden, gray or dark today, you may be seeing tarnish. Silver reacts with sulfur-containing substances around it, forming a darker surface layer. That can happen to genuine silver. A change in color alone doesn’t tell you whether a piece is authentic.

Pools and spa days deserve a little planning. Chlorine, humidity, perspiration and cosmetics can contribute to discoloration. Natural water is not automatically gentler, either: some hot or mineral springs contain sulfur compounds. Water chemistry varies from place to place. Your bracelet looking fine after one visit’s lovely, but it’s not a promise that the next visit will have the same result.

You may have heard someone call this a change in “body chemistry.” When we talk about practical care, we’d start with what has touched your jewelry. Have you been sweating more, trying a new lotion or sunscreen, wearing perfume, using cleaning products or spending time in different water? Your routine can change even when your chain has not. A bracelet is not a health test, so please don’t use its appearance to draw conclusions about your body.

Before swimming or visiting a hot spring, think about how you will protect your piece. If it’s welded on, ask us about removal and reconnection before your plans rather than assuming permanent jewelry is immune to chemicals. If a color change has already happened, pause before reaching for a strong household cleaner. The stones, settings and finish matter when choosing what to do next.

You don’t need to figure it all out on your own. Bring us your care questions and tell us what your piece has been exposed to. We’re happy to talk through the details with you. Planning a new bracelet? Let’s explore the materials alongside your everyday routine, so your choice feels personal and informed.
